1. Get your vehicle road ready. Before you hit the road, perform a basic safety check by checking your vehicle’s tire pressure, wiper blades, fluid levels, lights, and air conditioning. Make sure your spare tire is well inflated and that you have jumper cables and extra wiper fluid on hand. If you’re not sure what to do, have a trained technician inspect your vehicle.

2. Get a good night’s sleep. According to the NHTSA, driving while drowsy is a contributing factor in nearly 100,000 accidents every year. Getting enough sleep is key to preventing accidents caused by drowsy driving. Drive only when well rested, and switch off with another driver every few hours, if possible.

3. Bring a map. Nowadays, we are so reliant on using our cellphones for GPS, but it’s important to have a backup plan. Having a good old-fashioned map on hand can ensure that you can still get where you’re going if there are road closures, the loss of cellular service, or losing your phone.

4. Share your itinerary. Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or friends in case something happens. Having someone who knows your travel plans can be a lifesaver. They can get in touch with the proper authorities and send help should you need it.

5. Don’t get stranded. Consider signing up for a roadside assistance and/or rescue program.

6. Pack your car carefully. Store heavy items in the trunk or deep into the seat wells; this way, should you stop suddenly, these heavier items won’t become dangerous projectiles,

7. Keep an emergency kit in your car. Keeping an emergency kit in your car can help keep you safe and even get you back on the road faster. Your emergency kit, should include a first aid kit along with other essentials, such as a cell phone charger, flashlight and extra batteries, drinking water, and jumper cables—to name a few items.

Another tool no emergency kit should be without these days is a SABRE Safe Escape 3-in-1 Automotive Tool.
